Why We Banned Conventional Oil: A Founder’s Note on Putting Integrity Over Profit
At Buckeye Complete Auto Care, we get asked one question more than almost any other: "Do you have a cheaper oil change option?"
Our answer is always a firm, but polite, “no”.
In an industry where "loss leaders" and $29.95 oil change coupons are used to lure customers through the door, our decision to completely ban conventional oil from our shop might seem like a bad business move. However, this decision wasn't made by an accountant. It was made by a team of technicians who have seen firsthand what "cheap" oil does to a modern engine.
Here is the transparent truth about why we walked away from conventional oil and why we will never look back.
The "Black Death" of Engines
Over the last 20 years, we have torn down countless engines that failed prematurely. The common denominator for the failures: engine sludge.
Conventional oil is a natural product that begins to break down the moment it gets hot. As it degrades, it leaves behind a thick, tar-like residue known as sludge. This sludge clogs oil passages, starves critical components of lubrication, and eventually leads to catastrophic engine failure.
We realized we couldn't, in good conscience, sell a product that we knew was contributing to the slow "clogging" of our customers' second-most expensive investment.
Modern Engines Demand More
The days of the simple, low-stress engine are over. Today’s vehicles use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), turbochargers, and Variable Valve Timing (VVT). These systems are marvels of engineering, but they operate under intense heat and pressure.
Conventional oil simply cannot keep up. It evaporates too quickly and fails to protect the tiny, precision-machined parts that make your car run smoothly. By offering only synthetic oil, we ensure that every car leaving our bays—whether it’s a 2024 SUV or a 2010 sedan—has the thermal stability it needs to survive the road.
A Commitment to Your Car’s Longevity
We know that a synthetic oil change costs more upfront than a conventional one. But we also know that a synthetic oil change lasts longer.
If we offered a "budget" conventional oil change, we would be doing you a disservice. We would be choosing a quick sale today over the long-term health of your vehicle tomorrow. At Buckeye Complete Auto Care, we treat every car as if it belonged to our own family. And we would never put conventional oil in our family’s cars.
Integrity in the Bay
Banning conventional oil was about drawing a line in the sand. It was about deciding that quality is non-negotiable. We aren't interested in being the cheapest shop in town; we are interested in being the most trusted.
When you see "Full Synthetic Only" on our menu, know that it’s a promise. It’s our way of saying that we value your engine’s life more than a "cheap" marketing gimmick.
